Stories Are Made Loop By Loop is all about contemporary rug hooking being done with fabric, yarn, and plastic and how an “old” technique is still being used to tell stories and for self expression. Susan premiered the exhibit last year in Virginia. A few months ago, I shipped Holes (hooked in 2020) to Susan in West Virginia, so it could join in at this traveling show’s second stop.

This Friday, March 8, the exhibit opens at the Juliet Art Museum, part of the Clay Center in Charleston, West Virginia. Participating artists include: Cheryl Bollenbach, Meryl Cook, Susan Feller, Elizabeth Miller, Karen D Miller, Domenica Zara Queen, Terri Todd, By Jane’s Daughter, UnitingUs, Grue Shackleford, and Laura Salamy. If you’re like me and can’t get to Charleston, Susan has generously made the catalog available HERE. Topics taken up in the various pieces of art include: healing; cancer and mental health issues; motherhood and how it changes a woman; homelessness and addiction; environmental destruction and loss of natural resources; one’s sense of identity and finding a voice; and veterans’ advocacy.

Like many fiber arts, rug hooking is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, with artists applying more modern sensibilities and trying to bring attention to today’s social causes and passions. See the show, peruse the catalog, and observe how we’re all taking an old art form and using new/old techniques and materials to tell our stories. But like the artists who came before us, we’re still appreciating the colors and textures of this slow, meditative form of loop-making.

Take a colourful journey with textile artist Kirsten Chursinoff as she shares the inspiration, creativity, and design, behind her art quilts that have appeared in galleries and magazines.  Celebrating the beauty of the world through stitching, the quilts combine embroidery, felting, beadwork, and quilting.

About Kirsten Chursinoff:

Kirsten Chursinoff is a textile artist working in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Her main focus is creating art by combining embroidery and quilting techniques. Some of her recent themes include marine life and colourful garden embroideries.

Kirsten holds a Diploma in Textile Art from Capilano University. She has written articles for magazines such as Quilting Arts and Art Quilting Studio. She receives invitations to lecture at quilting and embroidery guilds, and has exhibited in solo and group shows. In 2006 she received the Visual Arts Development Award (VADA) presented by the Contemporary Art Gallery and the Vancouver Foundation. She is a member of the Craft Council of British Columbia.

IN THE STUDIO – Sept. 22 with Deirdre Pinnock

Textile work by Deirdre Pinnock intersects with her advocacy for mental health and diversity.

Deirdre Pinnock is a talented rug hooker, ardent mental health advocate, aspiring entrepreneur, and self-identified “woman of colour” based in Vancouver, BC. She is passionate about fusing different materials, vivid colors, and therapeutic qualities into her work along with a dash of playfulness.

She is best known for yarn-bombing positive and uplifting messages such as “be kind” and “you are enough” into public fences around the city. You can also find her performing stand-up comedy about being Black in Vancouver. Her work expands to hosting workshops, guest speaking on the issue of diversity through art, and creating memorial pieces known as Hearts of Honour, which act as living memories to allow families to grieve their loss. Courtesy of CTV, she is publicly known as the Vancouver Yarnbomber.

The purpose behind Deirdre’s art revolves around self-healing and empowering one to battle through grief, anxiety, and pain. She also weaves the current political climate into her fiber art, confronting issues in a whimsical and humorous way.

IN THE STUDIO WITH MERYL COOK – SEPTEMBER 9, 2020; 1-2 PM EASTERN (11-NOON MOUNTAIN)

 

Colour, texture, joy and self-compassion are the key features of Meryl Cook’s beautifully crafted hooked mats, her books about her journey from homeopath to artist and journal writer, and her journal writing practice. Meryl is the author of One Loop at a Time, a story of rughooking, healing and creativity (2016) and One Loop at a Time, The Creativity Workbook (2017).

What makes Meryl’s process unique is the ties between her writing and design. This introspective process includes writing on the linen around the design highlighting the inspiration for each mat, selecting colours based on Chakra colour theory, and using techniques that follow the healing energy to produce an intuitive, abstract design. Each mat represents the next step in her life journey.

Since 2016, Meryl has spoken and taught creativity workshops across Canada and in the U.S. A juried member of Craft Nova Scotia, her work has appeared in the Craft Nova Scotia Member’s Exhibition (2019 & 2020 (upcoming)), and as a special exhibit at Sauder Village Rug Hooking Week (2018). What began as a way of holding space for herself following breast cancer treatment has become a career as an artist and as a corporate team facilitator focusing on well-being and engagement.

Join Meryl Cook as she shares the basics of the Chakra colour system and how she applies it to her intuitive design process. Come prepared to play with colour and to take a tour of Meryl’s “Wild Women” mats.

A lifelong fibre lover, Patti Mullins Colen has journeyed from learning to knit early in childhood, to sewing, quilting, spinning, and rug hooking in retirement. She has been able to marry her love of documentary photography with the technique of rug hooking. Her work has progressed from designs based on her photography, to her ability to “art her feelings” about the world around us using fibre and a hook. Immersing herself in her art has allowed Patti to cope with the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Join Patti as she talks about her journey through her rugs and her own personal process.

Patti  is a finalist in the 2020 edition of Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs, published by Rug Hooking Magazine. You can see and follow Patti Mullins Colen’s work on her Instagram at @thewoollycrone.
