How many of you have fallen in love with a style of rug or a theme or design or what-have-you, enough that you feel a pressing need to hook more and more of them? I find myself feeling like that with the whole Boucherouite thing. For those not familiar with the Moroccan rugs, check out this fabulous article dealing with the history of the rugs and the Berber peoples who make them. I warn you, you’ll start seeing these types of rugs in every home magazine and website you frequent.
In essence the Boucherouite is a simple rag rug. Strips or unraveled fibers of older textiles, such as clothing or worn out rugs, are recycled and woven together to create something new. Yet the humble origins of these rugs serve only to accentuate the remarkable nature of the finished products which take full advantage, not only of the weaving skills of their makers, but of the benefits of their patchwork components.

Certainly, I’ve written about the Boucherouites before, when I hooked my first one last year. Yes, mine are hooked; I don’t weave them. I fell in love with these rag rugs with their seemingly haphazard designs and color schemes when they started showing up in my Pinterest feed. The pics made it difficult initially to discern whether they were hooked, woven, or made in some other way. The fact that the weavers create them out of old textiles – like I hook my rugs! – made it impossible for me not to try my hand at one. Again, hooking, not weaving.
I found that my own sense of design, despite my best efforts, didn’t allow me to create a rug as “irregular” as the true Boucherouites. That’s okay; it’s how inspiration works. It’s not about copying. After I hooked (and sold!) the first one, I knew that I was going to do another sooner than later. And that it would be BIG.
Fast forward to this winter. The BIG Boucherouite’s time has come. I drew it up on a piece of monks’ cloth and sewed on the rug binding. Prior posts have shown that. Currently, I’m in the midst of cutting sheets into strips. I’d recycled old bedsheets for the “First Boucherouite” and loved the effect. That plus the high we get here at High on Hooking when we up-cycle made it a winner. I’m not completely sure how the colors will work on this new rug, it’s a fluid thing, but I’ll need to have strips at the ready. It’s a LOT of hand-cutting for me and the scissors.
So, you see the theme running here. It gets better. Last week, the Mystery Rug finally finished and off to the framers, I needed to start hooking pieces for this year’s selling season. Specifically, I have Albuquerque’s Recycled Art Fair coming up in April. I decided to start with a double mug rug because…they tend to sell pretty quickly. I took out a couple of OD green mugs I’d found at Savers and stared at them, waiting for them to channel an idea into my brain. And I waited. And I waited. In the meantime, I was sewing up the BIG Boucherouite. Ooh! Got it! Thus the “Baby Boucherouite” was born. I know, I know, I risk becoming boring. But they’re fun!
In the meantime, before I can finally hook the BIG rug, this is what’s on the frame today. No, it’s not part of the Boucherouite theme, but it is another double mug rug. T-shirt, bathing suit, nightie, and an old blouse ensure that I can use it at the Recycling Fair which requires 70 or 75% of items offered for sale be constructed of recycled materials. I can do that, no prob.

It finally happened. After hooking for maybe 14 years, I finally got me a cutter! No more cutting wool by hand with the old scissors unless I wish to (for some dumb reason). Check him out; my husband named him Brad after the insurance commercial. You know, the one where the girl goes on about her long relationship with her car Brad. Until she totaled him. We will NOT be totaling Brad in this house!
He’s an old Harry M. Fraser 500-1 that had been donated to the guild. And he works much better than the old and very sad Bliss I’d tried. Brad was accompanied by a #4 cutter head. What am I going to do with a #4 cutter head – me who spends most of my time cutting up old sheets and t-shirts to hook with? That’s like hooking with crazy thin sock yarn or something. But, but…
Remember how the Adobe Wool Arts Guild (AWAG) is doing our friendship rug project? Well, after finishing the Mystery Rug last week (currently at the framer’s), I could finally work on the friendship rug that’s been sitting in my house for over a month. Mary S drew a tessellation – very cool. Mary S, along with many of the gals in AWAG, often hooks with #4s. Laura does not. But, when all you pretty much have is a #4 cutter head… So, I threw on the big girl panties and cut #4 strips. And then, to the blue light of the television’s Olympic coverage – mostly figure skating, I hooked my part of Mary’s rug. On the linen it came on, not monks’ cloth. Okay, I used a little cream rug yarn for texture, but I THINK IT CAME OUT SO COOL! I am not so bad at this hooking thing after all.
So, now I’m hooking with the big girls – wispy, little strips of wool. Is this my new medium? Hell, no! Sure, I’ll definitely use the cutter. In fact, I ordered a #6 head because I’m in the midst of a rug that I started using Mary R’s Townsend cutter. Then I found a #8 that was with the junky Bliss cutter. So, I’ll have a nice little stable of three heads to use WHEN I’M NOT CUTTING BY HAND/HOOKING/UP-CYCLING T-SHIRTS, BEDSHEETS, AND OTHER UNLOVED TEXTILES. (The plastic bag mystery rug was a good experiment, but not one going into the permanent repertoire.) In fact, just last night I finished sewing the rug binding onto my new project. (Remember, I’m one of those who was taught to do that first, makes it easier to finish later, and NO WHIPPING!) It’s BIG, the biggest I’ve tackled thus far, but I can’t wait. It’ll be the “Big Boucherouite,” done up mainly in bedsheets because of how much I loved that in the “First Boucherouite.”
Nonetheless, like I said, I’ll definitely use the cutter. It’s kind of funny, though. Last week, there was a post on one of the hooking Facebook sites. Someone made mention of how disappointed she was in her old Fraser, that she could only cut two strips at a time. Very slow going, and what cutter did others use and recommend? Life’s relative, I guess. Here I was – same evening – pleased as punch that I was getting three (!) nice and even #4 strips cut at once. So much easier and quicker than using my scissors. But, like I said, it’s all relative. I’m sure that if I was hooking exclusively in wool, I’d be salivating over a Bolivar or the absurdly efficient Sizzix.

Like every good blogger who goes to a hook-in, I have returned home from last weekend’s Tucson Hook-In to share the event’s rug porn. Okay, I’m a little slower getting to it than the ladies who were at the Eliot Hook-In in Maine last weekend – a couple had there photos out by Sunday! – but does that matter? No!

How often do you find cool new art? In the case of Albuquerque’s Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festivals, three times each year if you choose. I usually hit up two of them, but the show held annually on Thanksgiving weekend is by far the best. Last week was no exception. Not only did I “re-connect” with some of the art I discovered in 2015 and ’16, but I found new stuff! (Okay, new for me; just go with it.) I simply must share it with you. Of course.
One of the first “very cool new art” booths I came across, Copper Phoenix Studio, belonged to artist Scott Palmer. Make sure you check out his website which says:
“…a unique combination of solid copper, impressionistic painting style, natural patinas and flame painting to form hand – crafted one of a kind works of art… With Copper as his canvas; Palmer reignites his passion for impressionistic works of art. “Copper can simply be the background that provides luminescence to a painting or it can play a major role in the actual work.”
As I mosied away from Palmer’s booth, I came across…wire animals! Gary Chaffin of ArtWire Graphics sculpts his creatures with wire!
“The experimental use of negative space has been the focus of my sculptures. Each of my three-dimensional designs are spontaneous impressions. I begin with a loose image in my mind. Then as I develop the idea in wire, the finished design takes on its own personality. There are no patterns or drawings beforehand. Each complex design is created totally freehand, sometimes from a continuous wire. My only tools are a pair of pliers and cutters.”
I love how he begins with a “loose image” in his mind and that the designs take on their own personalities. Raise your hand, hookers, if you understand that perfectly. (I’m not sure if, in my case, that’s always for the good. 🙂 )
I don’t have too much info on the next artist, but I was overwhelmed with his work, especially on this chest. The graphics got me – love that kind of work. I mean, you could make a matching rug from his design easy-peasy. And then store any leftover wool or t-shirts or whatever in it.
So, I didn’t actually get to meet the next artist; her husband was manning the booth. And I warn you ahead of time, I an a tile-maniac. Love tiles! Have several in my house. Some in drawers because I don’t have enough room for all of them, and I do like to display other media. The artist is Debora Duran-Geiger of Tucan Tiles. If I eavesdropped correctly, she lives and works in both Santa Fe and Boquete, Panama. That latter bit really showed in her hummingbird art, not that I got a good pic of it. 🙁 But I got the ones you see here!
According to a card her husband gave me:
“…All designs are created by Debora Duran-Geiger using Cuerda Seca technique (wax resist linework). Each tile is individually hand painted using opaque and translucent glazes. Other techniques utilized…are: Slip trailing, Sgraffiato, and Majolica. Tiles are fired in an electric kiln to…1840 degrees. …They make fabulous trivets or may be inset directly into walls.”
In the spirit of reuse and recycling, I have to share this artist’s work. Came across her just before I left the show. Meg Harper‘s COLOR-FILLED animal portraits grabbed me. That she paints them on old signs, discarded cabinet doors, and tin roofs took me over the top. (Me who prefers to hook with old t-shirts and bed-sheets and such.)
Lastly, I present to you a gorgeous rug by Nancy Pierce of Artisan on the cul-de-sac. Like me, Nancy is a newish member of the Adobe Wool Arts Guild who moved to New Mexico within the last couple of years. I spied this rug in a promotional email from the Rio Grande Festival and asked her if I photograph and share it.
I suppose that you’ve indulged me enough. One of the big reasons I actually get dressed and leave my house the day after Thanksgiving for this show is that it leaves me with a desire to go home and to make my own art. INSPIRATION is the word. I hope that you’re feeling some after seeing the pics here.
Tynan will be back next week with “What’s on the frame.” Frankly, there’s absolutely nothing on it. I haven’t hooked a loop since the Santa Fe Fiber Festival the weekend before Thanksgiving. It’s unusual for me, but everyone needs to take a break even from the things they love to do. Besides it let me pick up my crochet hook again. For the first time since last winter. It takes so much more concentration to make sure that those rows are straight! You have no idea how many I pulled out last night as I tried to multitask to “Stranger Things.” (Tom hates it when I ask him to rewind because I missed something important doing needlework.) But Tomorrow the guild starts a three-day retreat. It’s back to the frame for me, to the piece I started in May when Cheryl Bollenbach was here teaching again. Bet it’ll look familiar when I finally show it off.
